4.What do you look for in a music magazine? -Events, Gossip, Interviews etc.

5. What genre do you prefer; 'Hip Hop' or 'RnB'

Main Task: Double Page Spread Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

Denotation:
The double page spread consists of a multi coloured dark background and two photographs of a woman in which she is looking at the camera in both images. The image on the left side of the double page spread has a woman smiling and her head slightly tilted in the direction of the camera. On the picture on the right side of the double page spread, the woman looks more modest, and she is holding her knee. The camera shot that was taken of the woman on the left side of the double page spread is a medium close up, showing her head, shoulders and her chest. However on the right side of the double page spread, the shot that has been taken is a medium long shot showing her head shoulders and part of her legs.

Connotation:
As there are two pictures of the woman, the picture on the left which is in dark brown may indicate that’s how she used to be. Just like a flash back, the magazine may want us to remember the glossy side of the woman. But in the right picture, the lady looks at the camera in a gentle way which may suggest that she as an older artist may not be trying so hard for her career, but to look back on it.

Colour Scheme:
The colour scheme of this double page spread is orange and brown. This may be to give the impression of a dated person. The woman in the picture, Jamelia could be seen as an older artist compared to the more modern artists of today’s music. Having the brown and orange colour scheme may make the reader think that she is not over and done with but still has more to come.

Denotation:
The double page spread consists of a colourful photograph which is a medium long shot from his head to his thighs of a man who is standing up and has his hands out to the side. The man is also leaning to one side and has his head tilt while still looking at the camera.

Colour Scheme:
The colour scheme of this double page spread is orange & blue. These bright colours give the double page spread the theme of summer time which is also the main title. From doing this, the double page spread looks more friendly and bright, more likely to attract younger readers.

Connotation:
The photograph of the man standing with his arms out to the side may suggest he is imitating an aeroplane, since the time most people like to travel is summer which is also the theme.
The circles around ‘summer time’ are like a sun hence the writing in bold letters. As well as this, it can be used as a target so it would be the first thing that the readers look at, making them want to read on since everybody loves summer.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation
The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a man looking down. It is a medium close up showing his head, shoulder and chest. The background of the photograph is beige, and the photograph covers the majority of the magazine cover. In front of the man is a rolling stone Masthead as well as four separate cover lines which are white. The photographed man’s name is in white and there are yellow lines separating the cover lines. A barcode is visible in the bottom right corner.

Masthead
Rolling stones masthead is very distinctive: Yellow with a white outline and a black drop shadow. The font used is a serif font, and after the first letter of each word, the lower case joins up to each other. The font used is similar to the famous ‘Coca Cola’ writing and connotes the American culture. The words ‘rolling stone’ comes from a proverb, ‘A rolling stone gathers no moss’, giving a suggestion of anti-establishment and non conformity. Also ‘the Rolling stones’ are another very famous and long running band, suggesting that this magazine has all of the connotations associated with the usage of the phrase in the past. All of the musicians who have used this phrase in their music had reputations of having very rock and roll lifestyles – making the magazine seem dangerous and risqué. The name ‘Rolling Stone’ tells the audience this magazine is music based.

Character
The cover photograph is of the successful American rapper ‘Lil Wayne’.

Composition
He is posed in a calm manner, like something has gone wrong sort of way. His body language is quite negative.

Costume
He is wearing a hat slightly leaned to the side and he is not wearing any clothing on his upper body which exposes his body full of tattoos. This may appeal to the target audience who is most likely to be people who listen to rock music.

NVC
His non verbal communication is unenthusiastic; he is looking down as if in sorrow.

Lighting
The lighting is high key, as the Photograph is meant to be display his body clearly.

Setting
There is no setting; however the brown-peach coloured background connotes a sense of misery or confusion.

Cover Lines
The main cover-line that relates to his photograph says: “Lil Wayne goes rock” This references to the genre of music Lil Wayne does which is rap, but it has changes to rock.

Target Audience
Considering all points, the likely target audience would be male and female (more male audience members) ages 30-50. They would have a good knowledge on popular culture and take interest in a wide range of musical styles and the music industry. They are likely to be well read/educated, and have an interest in American popular culture.
